Coconut Water, A Good Replacement for The Lost Body Fluids During Fasting

Every day people lose fluid from the body as much as about 2 liters, whether in the form of urine, sweat or other. When fasting, the liquid becomes a limited income, but there is a quick way to replace lost body fluids.

Often, in Indonesia, people broke their fast by drinking coconut water. It turned out that this habit is enough to help eliminate thirst and replace water lost from the body after 14 hours in a day of fasting.

"Coconut water contains a balanced electrolyte or mineral composition, and similar to human blood fluid," says DR. Dr. Saptawati Bardosono, MSc from the Department of Nutrition Science, as quoted by detikHealth, Saturday (08/21/2010).

Dr. Saptawati Bardosono is further said that coconut water contains as much as 95.5 % of water, 0.05 % of nitrogen, 0.56 % of phosphoric acid, 0.25 % of potassium, 0.69 % of calcium oxide, 0.59 % of magnesium oxide, and a bit of iron and sugar.

"When coconut water are consumed as a drink to relieve thirst, like drinking water, then this course is not a problem," said the doctor who is also a member of the Indonesian Medical Association Physician Nutrition (PDGMI).

Some people who suffer from kidney stones are also strongly believe that coconut water can help break the kidney stone. But according to Dr. Saptawati Bardosono , kidney patients need to be careful drinking it.

This is due to people who have kidney disorders, their kidneys can not properly perform its functions to regulate fluid and electrolyte balance in his body. So better be careful with all the fluids they drink.

air kelapa mudaAccording to Dr. Saptawati Bardosono, coconut water is used for herbal treatment by our ancestors since ancient times. Coconut water can facilitate the difficult urination, drunk, treat fatigue, and now also used to raise the body fluids when someone get dengue fever.

"Since the days of our ancestors, coconut water in addition to eliminating thirst also been known by several other properties that require scientific proof," said the doctor who is also a lecturer at FKUI.

Dr. Barbara exemplifies the benefits of coconut water is its lauric acid content can be useful as antiviral and anti-germ. Its properties as isotonic drinks, sugars, potassium and low sodium content is suitable as energy drinks for athletes because it can regulate electrolyte body and eliminate fatigue.
